Early Martial Arts Background
As a kid, Matt was first exposed to martial arts by his father who trained and competed in amateur kickboxing, boxing and karate. At a very young age, his father enrolled him in youth kickboxing and Kenpo karate. Over the course of his life Matt has trained in a variety of methods, both traditional and modern. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, amidst a prevalent fighting culture. Continual exposure to both street and early home violence, led him to pursue martial arts, conflict resolution strategies, and meditation from an early age. In his twenties Matt worked as a bodyguard, further developing conflict resolution methods.
In the early 2000s, Matt's primary focus was traditional and Wing Chun and other modern Wing Chun methods including Lau Kune Do. After moving to Seattle, Matt began training Tsun Jo® under the direction of esteemed founder and director, Sijo John N. Beall and has dedicated himself to the development of this outstanding art since.
As an active martial artist, Matt seeks to challenge and further push himself at every opportunity. Wanting a deeper understanding of ground defense, he began crosstraining submission wrestling in 2009. After training with various instructors over the years to learn elements of wrestling, judo and jiu jitsu, in 2014, Matt began training under Nathan Orchard, Head Instructor of 10th Planet Portland, whose teaching and training style highly appealed to him.
The Wim Hof Method, Meditation, Certification, Background
In 2016, Matt became a Certified Instructor of the Wim Hof Method. He was part of the first group of U.S. instructors and early pioneers to help bring this method to the world. “I'm so grateful to be part of this method that supports healthy and optimal living. This method is bringing tangible results, and is continuously subjecting itself to rigorous scientific review, assisting both general health and longevity as well as optimized athletic performance. Health, Strength and Happiness is the motto. I can hardly think of a better combination."
“I can remember doing breathing and meditation with my dad as a little kid. So, I got into meditation early, was always reading books and trying things out as a way to cope with, and later to simply improve, my life. Over the course of these years, I've tried all kinds of different methods to see what works for me: TCM, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Mindfulness, Single Point, Yoga, etc. My personal goal is to simply find workable solutions to sustain concentration and focus while tapping into consciousness to explore its depths. My bigger goals as they relate to my students and the public is to try and help as many people as I can. I love connecting to people sharing what works for me with the idea that it might work as well for them. I'm grateful to the many teachers and methods I have encountered, but nothing has worked for me like the Wim Hof Method in terms of depth and consistent access to the deepest parts of me. Whatever my starting point, I'm able to quickly and consistently achieve the desired state through this practice. And the way it supports my martial arts is incredible. It's all beyond cool to me.”
